Beta Reading

Are You Looking For A Beta Reader?

What Is A Beta Reader?

A beta reader is someone who reads an author’s unpublished manuscript and provides honest feedback about the plot, characters, writing, pacing, and other elements of the story that may or may not need improvement. A good beta reader is first and foremost an avid reader, not a professional editor or proofreader. It is not their job to fix grammar and spelling errors. A beta reader provides feedback solely on the story from a reader’s perspective.

Why Should You Choose Me?

I am a bibliophile (booklover) at heart and I live and breathe words. Books are my true passion in life and nothing makes me happier than reading. I have been an avid reader for nearly ten years and I honestly don’t know what I ever did before without books  in my life.

I have been a member of Goodreads for over four years and have read and reviewed over 500+ books in a variety of genres. My absolute favorite genres to read are New Adult and Adult romance. I have been a part of the book blogging community for two and a half years, and I believe my experience as a book blogger, reader, and reviewer has connected me to many other readers who have given me valuable information about what others like and dislike in a book as well. I feel that I can offer you my honest  and objective opinion about what works in a story and what doesn’t.

My main goal as your beta reader is to try and help make your story the best that it can be solely from a reader’s perspective. I do not want to rewrite your book for you, but merely offer suggestions to improve your story that you can take into consideration or not.

What Can You Expect From Me?

  •  I will be objective and provide honest feedback about the storyline, characters, pacing, writing, inconsistencies (if any), etc.
  • I will read your manuscript as a reader, not as an editor/proofreader.
  • I will be kind and deliver any constructive criticism with compassion.
  • I will make comments and suggestions when needed.
  • I will provide a summary of my thoughts (like a review) of what I liked and disliked about the story after I finish it.
  • I will only read the manuscript once. If you make changes to it after I have given any feedback, I won’t re-read the manuscript.
  • I will beta read your manuscript in a timely manner.
  • I will not publicize any feedback or comments, nor will I leave a review anywhere online.

Email discussion of your manuscript. If you have further questions about any additional aspects of the book you want feedback on, I would be happy to answer them the best that I can via email.

What Are My Preferred Genres?

I only read Fiction and I prefer New Adult and Adult Romance (ages 18+) in a variety of genres. Since I am in my twenties, I find that it is more difficult for me to relate to Young Adult books whose characters are still in high school. I tend to find their behavior annoying and immature, so I don’t usually like to read them.

The reason I am picky about what I read is because I don’t want to do you or your book a disservice if I truly don’t enjoy reading the genre. I have the most experience reading New Adult and Adult Romance books, so I feel more comfortable giving my honest opinion and hopefully helpful feedback to you if the book is in either of those categories. I will not read a book that doesn’t contain romance.

I DO NOT read any of the following:

  • Non-Fiction (Political, Autobiographical, Biographical, etc.)
  • Gay/Lesbian (M/M, F/F)
  • Horror
  • Dystopian
  • Dark Fiction/Romance
  • Poetry
  • Graphic Novels
  • Thriller/Crime
  • Historical
  • Suspense

What Manuscripts Do I Accept?

  • Novels
  • Novellas

I accept manuscripts in any of the following formats:

  • Microsoft Word Document* (Preferred format)
  • PDF
  • Kindle (Mobi)

*I will make in-manuscript comments using the Track Changes feature in Word. If you send me a book in PDF or Kindle format, I will take notes and provide you with a breakdown of any comments/suggestions I have in a Microsoft Word document or PDF letter – whichever you prefer.

If you have a list of questions for me after I finish reading your book, I will be more than happy to answer them the best that I can. All communications between myself and the author will be conducted via email.

What Do I Charge?

I charge $0.0015* per word (Paid in USD) with a minimum project of 40,000 words.

Example: 0.0015 x 80,000 = $120

I round up to the nearest dollar amount.

Payments are only accepted via PayPal.

Once I have received the manuscript via email, and confirm word count and price with you, I will send you an invoice for payment through PayPal. Cancellations and /or refunds are not available once I have received payment. I will start beta reading your manuscript after I have received payment in full.

“I have used many beta readers in the past, and few and far between ever get back to me or provide solid constructive feedback. I have never found this to be the case with Julia. She always gives me the best tips and insights as a reader to improve my stories. Julia is on time, precise with her advice, and very professional. I wouldn’t go to anyone else.” – Inda Herwood, author of Jump Start My Heart and other New Adult romances

“As a new author working on my first novel, I was sort of fumbling around to find my way. Then I found Julia at The Romance Bibliophile. She is personable, professional and thorough. She has basically held my hand through this process and I am truly thankful I came across her website. I highly recommend her services and will be using her again in the near future. 5 highly deserved stars.” – Paige Hill, author of The Fight

“There are so many important steps between finishing a novel and actually publishing it. Receiving thoughtful, comprehensive, and constructive feedback is top among them. Julia is such a great resource for romance authors in this regard. Her extensive experience in the genre – not to mention her genuine enthusiasm for the stories themselves – puts her in the perfect position to provide notes and suggestions that make your work better. I’m thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with Julia on my most recent book and can’t wait to partner with her again!” – Katy Ames, author of After the Island, After the Fall, and After the Storm
